SUMMARY:Voices Across the Divide
DESCRIPTION:“Voices Across the Divide” combines dance\, storytelling\, and conversation to explore how people from diverse backgrounds experience and navigate the current political and social climate in the United States. \nDrawing on interviews with Americans\, fragments of their personal stories and perspectives are woven into a sound composition to which a moving body responds through dance improvisation. Rather than seeking clear answers or a representative picture of US society\, the performance aims to create a space for the complexity\, uncertainty\, and human experiences that can exist beyond political labels. A dialogue emerges between voice and body\, listening and responding\, difference and recognition. \nFollowing the performance\, Prof. Felipe Fernández will offer an anthropological perspective on some of the themes that emerge\, critically examining the terms “polarization” and “extremism” and questioning the liberal rationale through which these concepts are often understood. Rather than downplaying contemporary political conflicts\, his contribution invites a more critical engagement with these concepts and the phenomena they seek to describe.
